Brit buyers looking to the East

November 30, 2010

Many recent headlines have focused on Asians investing in property in the UK – but Brits are also increasingly looking to buy property in the Asia Pacific region according to research by UK-headquartered asset management firm Aviva Investors.

Aviva surveyed institutional investors, pension consultants, wealth managers, and independent financial advisers at its annual property conference in London and found that 74 per cent would probably buy property abroad in the coming three years with Asia Pacific offering the greatest prospective returns.

“Real estate is a key asset class for long-term investors, but questions have been asked recently about whether there is any value left following this year’s rally in the UK,” said Ian Hally, Asia Pacific CEO for Aviva Investors, adding that more investors are “looking east beyond their home borders.”

“Asian economies look to be much better placed for recovery than their western counterparts, making real estate investments in the region particularly compelling, which has been less reliant on debt over the past decade at a government, corporate and personal level. This should lead to stronger investor and occupier demand.”
